CHILDREN ARE NOT "LITTLE ADULTS"

Murray MacIntyre Lumpkin, M.D., M.Sc. Deputy Commissioner for International and Special Programs Food and Drug Administration
Did you know that, until recently, approximately 75% of medicines used in children did not have prescribing information on how to use these medicines safely in children? FDA efforts to implement special pediatric legislation over the past decade has led to a significant amount of new, science-based, ethically-obtained information that helps parents and physicians to more safely and more effectively use medicines in our children.

Lincoln County Schools Release ABC Results
Results Mark a Successful Year

Lincoln County Schools released the 2007-2008 North Carolina ABC results today. Dr. David Martin, Superintendent of Lincoln County Schools states, “The ABC results indicate that Lincoln County Schools are on a path of continuous improvement. The results are indicative of the commitment by students, teachers, and parents to do whatever it takes to assist students to grow academically. I am proud of our results; however, we have more work to do.”

The North Carolina ABC plan was developed by the North Carolina Board of Education to allow public schools to focus more on basic skills, higher accountability and more local control over educational decisions. ABC scores are based on individual schools. The North Carolina ABC accountability model measures school achievement in three ways to determine schools’ success over time:
1. Percent of students’ test scores at or above the proficient level (Performance Composite)
2. Academic Growth (High or Expected)
3. Adequate Yearly Progress

Safer Summer Fun

Summer is an exciting time for kids—what are your child’s plans? Will he or she be spending time home alone? Going to local parks and pools with friends? Attending a sleep-away camp?

NCMEC recommends that parents and guardians consider children’s summer activities, both structured and unstructured, and take responsible actions to keep them safer. The first step is to open the lines of communication.

Kids need to know:

Neighborhood boundaries and whose homes they may visit.
Who to call and where to go in an emergency.
Their full names, address, and telephone number(s).
To keep doors locked and not open the door if they are home alone.
Not to approach a vehicle or accept a ride from anyone without your permission.
To avoid pools and other bodies of water without adult supervision.
Their curfew, and to call you if they will be late.

Other important reminders for parents:
Supervise children at malls, movies, arcades, or parks.
Choose and screen babysitters with care.
Before enrolling your children, investigate daycares, camps, and summer programs thoroughly.
Always listen to your children

Going to an Amusement Park?
Theme parks are great places for family fun. Take time to plan your trip, and talk to your kids about ways to

Scorpion Robber Wanted by FBI

CONCORD -- The FBI wants to find the man who robbed a bank in Concord, NC and hopes the public can help identify him. The robber has a distinctive scorpion tattoo on the left side of his neck. He also made a mistake after leaving the bank that could help lead to his capture.

He demanded money from the tellers and then forced the employees into the vault. On his way out the door, he pulled his mask up revealing his face. Witnesses saw him taking off in a late model white Chrysler Sebring. Concord Police and FBI Agents believe he is the same man responsible for several other bank robberies dating back to May 2007.

If anyone knows anything that may help investigators track this man down, they are asked to call the Charlotte Division of the FBI at 704-377-9200 or Concord Police at 704-920-5055.

Family Woodland Owners Have New Opportunities With Emerging Biomass
Energy Markets

RALEIGH -- With demand for fuel wood rising as the biomass energy market expands, North Carolina’s family woodland owners
are well-placed to enhance their assets, reduce overhead and maybe even turn a profit. To educate landowners, N.C.
Cooperative Extension is holding free dinner program across the state in September. Co-sponsors include the state’s
Division of Forest Resources and the U.S. Forest Service.

Every woodland produces so-called “trash trees” – tree species that are not in high demand for construction or furniture markets.
But rising needs for wood-fueled energy by utilities and manufacturers, and the increase in facilities that use wood for heat,
have increased the value of the trees.
