FRAUDULANT IDENTIFICATION CARDS

LINCOLNTON --
A recently passed state law and local aggressive enforcement may make it harder for illegal immigrants to obtain federal documents, then sell them to fellow immigrants.
Case in point, authorities busted a Hispanic male late last week for trafficking in stolen identification cards.

Lincoln County Sheriff's Lt. Hal Kluttz identified the suspect as 33-year-old Emilio Camerena Guzman of 410 Hunsucker Road, Hickory. Guzman was arrested in the parking lot of the Colonial Village Apartments in Lincolnton. He is charged with one count of trafficking in stolen identities and three counts of identity theft.

"The suspect was arrested after making arrangements to make false identification for an unidentified illegal immigrant," said Lt. Kluttz. "Guzman met with the person on one day to take a picture and returned the next day with a North Carolina Driver's License and number…. and a Social Security number and card for a price of $150."

MORE CHARGES FILED AGAINST TEEN

SHERRILLS FORD -- Lincoln County Sheriff's investigators have filed additional charges against one of three teens, already

Last Thursday, 18-year-old Christian Michael Moser of Sherrills Ford was charged with two counts of felony larceny of a motor vehicle and one count each of felony and misdemeanor larceny. On July 24, Moser and 16-year-old Brian Lee Harkey of Denver were charged with felony breaking, entering and larceny of a motor vehicle.

More charges may be pending including against Stanley Jeffrey Alan Varri, 16. Catawba, Iredell and Gaston County Sheriff's officials also have charges filed against the same trio in connection with home

LOCAL GRADUATE NAMED WCU UNIVERSITY SCHOLAR

Emily Love of Iron Station was one of 29 students given a special honor from her alma-mater, Western Carolina University. She was named a university scholar. Recently, Western Carolina graduated more than 1,000 spring graduates.

To receive the scholar designation, Love and her 28 fellow graduates had to achieve a grade-point average of 3.90 or better during their entire undergraduate tenure.

COMPANY TO HOLD RIBBON CUTTING TODAY
Leonard Automatics Officially Opens New Location

DENVER -- While operations officially began in the new location for Leonard Automatics around the first part of August, Lincoln Economic Development Association (LEDA) officials are holding a ribbon cutting at the new facility today (Thursday) at 11 a.m.

The new facility for Leonard is on 6.5 acres in LEDA's newest industrial park and is one mile from the company's previous location.

Company officials touted the move as a hallmark of the success of the company, giving the company "room to take the company to even greater levels of success."

LOCAL EATERY PART OF EXTREME MAKEOVER EXCITEMENT

CHARLOTTE -- A local Lincolnton eatery was part of national TV exposure in Charlotte recently. According to Fatz Cafe operating partner Byron Sackett, his restaurant catered ABC's taping of "Extreme Makeover Home Edition" in Charlotte, at a Sudbury Road residence that also serves as a daycare.
Sackett told The Carolina Scoop that everyone on the restaurant staff wanted to be a part of the event but that not everyone could go.
The King family of Charlotte sees their house for the first time after  being the recipient of ABC's Extreme Makeove Home Edition
"I didn't have a problem taking volunteers," said Sackett.

Approximately 500 people were served during the two days Fatz Cafe catered the event and Sackett said he chose people with a history of volunteering to work the event and that he chose those people as a reward for volunteering in the past.

NEW ORLEANS—Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Tremaine Luster is a busy man these days, as he has been since arriving in the Big Easy nine months ago.

Luster, the Navy Times 2008 Sailor of the Year, serves as enlisted detailer for more than 5,000 enlisted Navy Reserve medical personnel, leads weekly remedial physical fitness sessions at Navy Reserve Forces Command in New Orleans, runs in road races in the area, and visits local elementary schools to encourage students to stay away from drugs as part of Campaign Drug Free. He serves as his command's sexual assault program coordinator and has earned one bachelor's degree in health care management and another in human resources management.

STOLEN ART UNCOVERED
Is It Yours?

Talk about a surprising discovery. In 2006, a treasure trove of all kinds of artThe late William Kingsland's New York City apartment, found stuffed with hundreds of works of art after his death. work—some of which has subsequently been identified as stolen—was uncovered in a New York City apartment. In an effort to track down the rightful owners, the FBI and the Public Administrator of New York County have posted pictures of the most important pieces on the FBI website.

More than 300 works of art—paintings, sketches, sculptures, and other pieces by such artists as Pablo Picasso, John Singleton Copley, Alberto Giacometti, Giorgio Morandi, and Eugene Boudin—were discovered after the death of the apartment’s occupant, William M.V. Kingsland.

Kingsland was well known in New York City’s art circles as an engaging and intelligent connoisseur of art, books, architecture, and genealogy. But when he died, he left no will…and no apparent heirs to claim the floor-to-ceiling stacks of paintings and art works crammed into his one-bedroom apartment.

GREENVILLE TEEN SENTENCED FOR ARMED BANK ROBBERY


COLUMBIA, SC ---
United States Attorney W. Walter Wilkins stated that Antonio Lamar Scott,
age 19, of Greenville, was sentenced in federal court in Spartanburg for armed bank robbery and using a gun during a violent felony. 


   United States District Judge Henry F. Floyd sentenced Scott to 117 months in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release.

Scott had previously entered a guilty plea, along with co-defendant Troy Adam Davenport, to the February 13, 2007, armed bank robbery of First Savers Bank at 1818 Augusta Street in Greenville.
 
Evidence established that Davenport entered the First Savers Bank, pointed a handgun at a teller, and demanded money.  Bank employees
watched as Davenport fled the bank and jumped into a car, with Scott sitting in

HOWARDS CREEK-- "Father" David Hayes was smiling and laughing by the end of the MWF wresling show at the Howards Creek Veterans Center Saturday night. He had a lot of reason to; not only did he "convert" a new member to his stable known as "The Family," the new stable member -- "The Alley Rat" Pitt -- became MWF World Champion.

And 350-pound monster didn't have to pin anyone in a match to win the championship.

Instead, prior to the tag team title match main event, Pitt came to the ring to take issue with one-time interim commissioner Chris Mellon holding the World Title.

FDA Approves 2008-2009 Flu Vaccines

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced that it has approved this year's seasonal influenza vaccines that include new strains of the virus likely to cause flu in the United States during the
2008-2009 season.


The six vaccines and their manufacturers are:
CSL Limited, Afluria; GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, Fluarix; ID Biomedical Corporation of Quebec, FluLaval;
MedImmune Vaccines Inc., FluMist; Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics Limited, Fluvirin; and Sanofi Pasteur Inc., Fluzone.

This season's vaccines contain three strains of the
influenza virus that disease experts expect to be the
most likely cause of the flu in the United States.

New Orleans Man Sentenced
to More Than 15 Years in Prison for Espionage Involving China


WASHINGTON -- Tai Shen Kuo, age 58, of New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced today in the Eastern District of Virginia to 188 months in prison and required to forfeit $40,000 for conspiracy to deliver national defense information to a foreign government, namely, the
People’s Republic of China (PRC), in violation of
18 U.S.C., Section 794(a), (c). Kuo pleaded guilty to this offense on May 13, 2008, after being arrested on
February 11, 2008.

LINCOLNTON – By law, a vehicle that parks in a handicapped space needs to display a placard. Generally, those placards hang on a rear view mirror. However, a Lincolnton woman has been charged with stealing a placard from a vehicle at Wal-Mart on North Generals Boulevard Friday afternoon.

Around 2 p.m., officers were called to the store to reports that Jacqueline Elaine Caldwell, 31, of 113 Thornwood Lane, Stanley, had reached into a pickup and taken a placard.
