For What It's Worth
09/06/08

We are now fully submerged in two seasons, hurricane and election. And I wonder which one is more aggravating and frustrating than the other.

My 81 year old mother lives in Surfside Beach, SC. When one of her four children cannot be there with her however, she stays in an assisted living facility in Georgetown, SC. Currently she is in Georgetown. Jon has been driving me insane with worry over my mother's safety with Tropical Storm Hannah on her way. I keep trying to comvince him, and maybe myself a little as well, that she is being taken good care of where she is.

Jon's response is "That's what all those people in New Orleans said until all of the caretakers evacuated and left them stranded."

I have been on the phone for days trying to convince my mother and my brother and sisters that I will go get her and leave all questions and fears behind.

APPLE FESTIVAL NEAR

The Lincoln County Apple Festival is on Saturday, September 20 from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in downtown Lincolnton. A lot of people have worked hard to make this festival one of the safest and most enjoyable ever. The vendors are well aware of important changes in the festival guidelines. In this column, I’ll try to highlight those that pertain to the general public.
Kevin Starr, North Carolina Cooperative Extension - Lincoln County

First, no animals are allowed on festival grounds. This is a city ordinance. Exceptions are service animals such as guide dogs and animals which are an approved part of the event itself.

Secondly, don’t move barricades in order to enter downtown with a vehicle. This warning extends late into the evening hours until the city is through cleaning the streets. They do a great job cleaning up the downtown area but must be able to do it safely. Law enforcement will be issuing tickets for those who ignore the barricades.

Now let’s talk about some other bits of information that might be useful to you. The two largest parking areas available to the public are at Lincolnton High School on North Aspen Street and Gaston College on South Aspen Street. The Kiwanis Club will again be running their shuttle from Lincolnton High School to the court square. Round-trips are only a $1.00 but I’m sure an extra donation to support their worthy causes would be appreciated. Thanks go to Buddy Stasney for again providing the vehicles for the shuttle.

Stormy Times Ahead

Leigh Guth, North Carolina Cooperative Extension - Lincoln County
We hiked South Mountain this weekend and paused at what they call Hugo – the rockslide that Hurricane Hugo’s massive rains sent tumbling down the mountain several years ago. It got me to wondering, is my home ready for lots of rain and loss of electricity – or would we crash down much like those boulders? Here are some tips for staying at home during a disaster. For more information check www.ces.ncsu.edu/disater/factsheets .

Water is a priority. You should have at least 1 gallon of water per person per day and be prepared for 3 days. So, a family of four would want 12 gallons of water stored at a minimum. This should be enough for drinking, food preparation, washing dishes and bathing. More water will be needed if it is very hot or if you have children, nursing mothers, or sick people in your household. If you are on well water, you’ll need additional water to flush toilets. Clean soft drink bottles are excellent for storing water. If you need to purify water, use ¼ teaspoon of bleach for each gallon of water.

FIRE ANTS CONTINUE TO SPREAD
Kevin Starr, North Carolina Cooperative Extension - Lincoln County
Fire ants have been established in Lincoln County for a good while now. Most of the reports of sightings have come from east of Lincolnton. But as I was mowing the grass yesterday, I spotted some small mounds in my own yard about four miles west of town. There’s nothing to stop fire ants from spreading throughout our area so I thought it might be a good time to remind folks about these troublesome insects again.

(Publisher’s Note: While many of the “Knowing Your Neighbor” stories are written as stories, I wrote the following in the first person. To have an hour of Doug Mayes’ time – especially with Milton Baker on WLON Radio – is something I’ll always cherish.)

LINCOLNTON -- Like many journalists, I keep a "wish list" of stories that I want to do. I've always wanted to interview Doug Mayes, for example, because of the contributions he made to journalism, media and Charlotte television.

I finally got my chance to sit down with my friend in the studios of WLON radio on Startown Road. Milton Baker invited me to sit-in with Doug during the Friday "Community Spotlight" broadcast, and when Milton asked me, I jumped at the chance.

It's always good to see Doug. When I first went down to the studios of Channel 9 to talk about a news partnership, who did I run into in the lobby but Doug! There he was, coming out of the studios.
