LEDA OFFICIALS HOPE TO REV ECONOMIC ENGINE THROUGH DRAG RACING

By Jon Mayhew

CHARLOTTE --
Approximately 50 members of the Lincoln Economic Develop Association traveled by bus from Doug Herbert Racing to the new Z-Max Dragway at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord for the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Carolinas Cup on Sept. 12.

"This was their first experience at a drag race and the contrasts with NASCAR were many," said LEDA new business manager Kim Phillips. "For example, each ticket holder has the opportunity to access the pit area, allowing for fans to get up close and personal with their favorite drivers and their crews while preparing for the next heat."

Phillips called the atmosphere in the pits "carnival-like."

Fact Sheet: Project Safe Childhood

Project Safe Childhood

Project Safe Childhood (PSC) is a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 that aims to combat the proliferation of technology-facilitated sexual exploitation crimes against children. The threat of sexual predators soliciting children for physical sexual contact is well-known and serious; the danger of perpetrators who produce, distribute, and possess child pornography is equally dramatic and disturbing.

The Department of Justice is committed to the safety and well-being of every child and has placed a high priority on combating sexual exploitation of minors. Through a network of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and advocacy organizations, PSC coordinates efforts to protect our children by investigating and prosecuting online sexual predators.

WHEN CRISIS STRIKES
New FBI Technology is Ready to Help

Staff Reports

ORION allows the FBI and its partners to coordinate crisis situations no matter how many personnel are involved or where they are located.

On the morning of October 3, 2002, four people were murdered outside the nation’s capital. It was the start of a shooting spree in the region that resulted in 10 deaths and sparked a massive hunt for the killers.

The so-called Beltway snipers were caught three weeks later, but the challenges posed by the case—multiple shootings in different locations, several investigative command centers in different jurisdictions, tens of thousands of phone and e-mail tips streaming in (so many that at one point they had to be collected in boxes and driven to the primary command center every four hours), and difficulty sharing information with our law enforcement partners at lightning speed—underscored the fact that our crisis management software systems needed an upgrade, especially in the post-9/11 era.

LINCOLNTON BICYCLIST INJURED IN ACCIDENT

Driver of Car Speaks Exclusively with The Carolina Scoop

By Jon Mayhew

UNION -- A Lincolnton man bicycling on Reepsville Road near Seagletown Road is struck by a car Monday around 6:15 p.m., and the driver of the car who hit him speaks exclusively with The Carolina Scoop.

As driver Kevin Douglas Kilpatrick, 37, of Gold Rush Drive, Lincolnton, looked at his damaged vehicle, his thoughts were only of the bicyclist Kilpatrick said he didn't see, identified by the North Carolina Highway Patrol as Chadwick Todd Wallace, 45, of Louise Avenue, Lincolnton.

"I didn't see him," said Kilpatrick. "The sun was blinding me when I came over the hill."

The Union Fire Department was called to the scene, along with the North Carolina Highway Patrol and Lincoln County EMS. Traffic was blocked on Reepsville Road and drivers were told to turn around as authorities worked the accident scene. The road was finally opened to traffic after 7 p.m. Monday.

Kilpatrick said he knew something was wrong when his windshield shattered on the passenger's side of his white Chevrolet. The impact of the crash pushed the bicycle across Reepsville Road; meantime, the same impact slammed Wallace into the road.

Kilpatrick thought Wallace's injuries were serious.

"He didn't move for several minutes," said a still-shaking Kilpatrick. "Man, I hope he's okay."

Dr. Jason Glass, the lead physician of the practice, told the crowd he's originally from Pennsylvania.

The town he and his family came from, said Glass, reminds him of Vale.

"I hope everyone expects great things in the next five, 10 and 20 years from here," Glass said. "We have received a great welcome in the past two months we've been here."

By Jon Mayhew

LINCOLNTON -- More than 50,000 people visited downtown Lincolnton Saturday for the annual Apple Festival.

"It was pretty quiet," said Abernathy. "We were pleased."

The 2008 festival marked the first year that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police brought their command post as a way to assist the combined resources of Lincolnton Police and the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office. History of the Lincoln County Apple Festival

By Dorothy S. Johnson
Special to The Carolina Scoop

LINCOLNTON -- The Lincoln County Apple Festival began as the result of an experience that Home Economics Agent, Melinda Houser, had with a strawberry festival in eastern North Carolina where she had worked previously. She suggested that Lincoln County have an Apple Festival, so together with Agricultural Extension Agent Howard Waynick and the apple growers, plans were made for Lincoln County’s first Apple Festival to be held in September of 1972 at the Boger City Methodist Church.

Approximately 300 folks attended. It was decided that the Agriculture Extension Service should sponsor an annual Apple Festival.

The next two festivals were held in the National Guard Armory including entertainment and exhibits. With attendance and related activities increasing, the need for larger

TIPS FOR ENJOYING THE APPLE FESTIVAL

By Kevin Starr
North Carolina Cooperative Extension

LINCOLNTON -- Most of the folks who will come to the Apple Festival on Saturday have attended many times before. But there are a lot of newcomers to the festival each year. Here are a few ideas that may make the festival more enjoyable for both veterans and first-timers.

Wear comfortable shoes. Seeing the entire festival requires considerable walking. This is really not the time to show off your latest shoe style unless they are good walking shoes.

If your children are old enough to see the festival on their own, make prior arrangements on when and where you will meet them. If you have young children, keep a close eye on them. If they get separated from you, notify law enforcement officials or other emergency personnel so that they can assist you in locating

APPLE FESTIVAL COVERAGE

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE APPLE

By Joyce Dorsey
North Carolina Cooperative Extension

LINCLONTON -- Apples are one of the prime and universally available fruits which comprise the fruit and vegetable group of the four essential basic food groups which nutritionists recommend. While apples are not a major source of any one specific nutrient, they contain modest amounts of a number of the important nutrients. The relatively high potassium and low sodium ration in apples is also significant in some cardiac and renal problems as well as in the diets for overweight persons.

Eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly are the keys to good health. Eating at least two cups of fruit each day will help get you and your family on the path to a healthier lifestyle. And apples, in all their flavorful varieties, fresh, frozen, canned, dried and 100% juice, prove that good-for-you food can taste good, too.

APPLE TIPS AND FACTS

By Melinda Houser
Extension Agent, Family & Consumer Services

LINCOLNTON --
When preparing anything with apples, including pie, follow these easy tips:

--Allow about two pounds of apples for one nine-inch pie (six to eight apples).

--When cooking with apples, use very little water; none for pies, betties or cobblers, etc. Add only enough water for applesauce to prevent the apples from scorching.

--When using apples in salad, dip apple slices in lemon juice, orange juice, vinegar and water, or salt water to prevent darkening. Golden Delicious Apples stay whiter longer.

--To soften brown sugar, put hardened brown sugar in a container that has a tight cover. Place a slice of apple on a bit of waxed paper and set on top of sugar. After a few days, the

Sixteen Foreign Nationals and Corporations Indicted on Charges of Illegally Exporting Potential Military and Explosives Components to Iran

MIAMI, FL-- A federal grand jury in Miami, FL, has returned a Superseding Indictment charging eight individuals and eight corporations in connection with their participation in conspiracies to export U.S.-manufactured commodities to prohibited entities and to Iran. The defendants are named in a thirteen (13) count Indictment – returned on Sept. 11, 2008 and unsealed today -- that includes charges of conspiracy, violations of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and the United States Iran Embargo, and making false statements to federal agencies in connection with the export of thousands of U.S. goods to Iran.

The charges were announced today by R. Alexander Acosta, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida; Patrick Rowan, Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security, U.S. Department of Justice; Mario Mancuso, Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security, U.S. Department of Commerce; Adam Szubin, Director, Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC); Sharon Woods, Director, Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS); and Julie L. Myers, Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The Superseding Indictment alleges that the defendants purchased, and then illegally exported to ultimate buyers in Iran, numerous "dual use" commodities. "Dual-use" commodities are goods and technologies that have commercial application, but could also be used to further the military or nuclear potential of other nations and could be detrimental to the foreign policy or national security of the United States. In this regard, the Superseding Indictment alleges that the defendants caused the export of 120 field-programmable gate arrays, more than 5000 integrated circuits of varying types, approximately 345 Global Positioning Systems ("GPS"), 12,000 Microchip brand micro-controllers, and a Field Communicator. All of these items have potential military applications, including as components in the construction of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
