OFFICIALS HOPE TO REV ECONOMIC ENGINE THROUGH
DRAG RACING
By Jon Mayhew
CHARLOTTE -- Approximately 50 members of
the Lincoln Economic Develop Association traveled
by bus from Doug Herbert Racing to the new Z-Max
Dragway at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord for
the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Carolinas
Cup on Sept. 12.
"This was their first experience at a drag
race and the contrasts with NASCAR were
many," said LEDA new business manager Kim
Phillips. "For example, each ticket holder
has the opportunity to access the pit area,
allowing for fans to get up close and personal
with their favorite drivers and their crews while
preparing for the next heat."
Phillips called the atmosphere in the pits
"carnival-like."

Reward now $25,000
for Skip Brinkley By Jon Mayhew
LENOIR,
NC Members of the Lincoln County
tactical team were in Caldwell County again,
aiding law enforcement from across the state in
looking for Skip Brinkley. Brinkley, who shot and
killed Deputy Adam Klutz Friday night and wounded
another officer, still remained at large as of
early Monday morning.
The U.S. Marshals office and the FBI are
offering a $10,000 reward each and Governor Mike
Easley has said the state will offer a reward of
up to $5,000 for Brinkley, who disappeared after
the shootings.
The investigation and search for Brinkley stopped
long enough Tuesday afternoon to pay respects to
the fallen deputy. A motorcade left Mackie-High
Funeral Home in Granite Falls and headed for
Mountain Grove Baptist Church. An Honor Guard
escorted a horse-drawn carriage carrying Klutz's

Safe Childhood (PSC) is a Department of Justice
initiative launched in 2006 that aims to combat
the proliferation of technology-facilitated
sexual exploitation crimes against children. The
threat of sexual predators soliciting children
for physical sexual contact is well-known and
serious; the danger of perpetrators who produce,
distribute, and possess child pornography is
equally dramatic and disturbing.
The
Department of Justice is committed to the safety
and well-being of every child and has placed a
high priority on combating sexual exploitation of
minors. Through a network of federal, state, and
local law enforcement agencies and advocacy

our children by investigating and prosecuting

The Union Fire Department was

Traffic was blocked on Reepsville Road and
drivers were told to turn around as authorities
worked the accident scene. The road was finally
opened to traffic after 7 p.m. Monday.
Kilpatrick said he knew
something was wrong when his windshield shattered
on the passenger's side of his white Chevrolet.
The impact of the crash pushed the bicycle across
Reepsville Road; meantime, the same impact
slammed Wallace into the road.
Kilpatrick thought Wallace's
injuries were serious.
"He didn't move for
several minutes," said a still-shaking
Kilpatrick. "Man, I hope he's okay."

Special to The Carolina Scoop LINCOLNTON -- The

of an experience that Home Economics Agent,

eastern North Carolina where she had worked
previously. She suggested that Lincoln County

before. But there are a lot of newcomers to the
festival each year. Here are a few ideas that may
make the festival more enjoyable for both
veterans and first-timers.
Wear comfortable shoes. Seeing the entire
festival requires considerable walking. This is
really not the time to show off your latest shoe
style unless they are good walking shoes.
If your children are old enough to see the

-- Apples are one of the prime and universally
available fruits which comprise the fruit and
vegetable group of the four essential basic food
groups which nutritionists recommend. While
apples are not a major source of any one specific
nutrient, they contain modest amounts of a number
of the important nutrients. The relatively high
potassium and low sodium ration in apples is also
significant in some cardiac and renal problems as
well as in the diets for overweight persons.
Eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly
are the keys to good health. Eating at least two
cups of fruit each day will help get you and your
family on the path to a healthier lifestyle. And
apples, in all their flavorful varieties, fresh,
frozen, canned, dried and 100% juice, prove that
good-for-you food can taste good, too.

Indictment returned on Sept. 11, 2008 and
unsealed today -- that includes charges of
conspiracy, violations of the International
Emergency Economic Powers Act and the United
States Iran Embargo, and making false statements
to federal agencies in connection with the export
of thousands of U.S. goods to Iran.
The
charges were announced today by R. Alexander
Acosta, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District
of Florida; Patrick Rowan, Acting Assistant
Attorney General for National Security, U.S.
Department of Justice; Mario Mancuso, Under
Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security,
U.S. Department of Commerce; Adam Szubin,
Director, Department of the Treasury, Office of
Foreign Assets Control (OFAC); Sharon Woods,
Director, Defense Criminal Investigative Service
(DCIS); and Julie L. Myers, Homeland Security
Assistant Secretary for U.S. Immigration and
Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The
Superseding Indictment alleges that the
defendants purchased, and then illegally exported
to ultimate buyers in Iran, numerous "dual
use" commodities. "Dual-use"
commodities are goods and technologies that have
commercial application, but could also be used to
further the military or nuclear potential of
other nations and could be detrimental to the
foreign policy or national security of the United
States. In this regard, the Superseding
Indictment alleges that the defendants caused the
export of 120 field-programmable gate arrays,
more than 5000 integrated circuits of varying
types, approximately 345 Global Positioning
Systems ("GPS"), 12,000 Microchip brand
micro-controllers, and a Field Communicator. All
of these items have potential military
applications, including as components in the
construction of improvised explosive devices
(IEDs).
