The man brought the woman to the Lincolnton Police Department on Tuesday, and told Lt. Tony Hallman that he found the woman walking down the road towards High Shoals. She was hitch-hiking according to the man.

"She was close to home in all actuality," said Hallman, after the woman's son came to the department and picked her up. "She just forgot where she was."

Walgreens Pays U.S. $9.9 Million to Settle Medicaid Prescription Drug Allegations

Staff Reports

WASHINGTON , DC – Illinois-based national retail pharmacy chain Walgreens has paid the United States and four participating states $9.9 million to resolve allegations of falsely billing the Medicaid program, the Justice Department

Walgreens submitted claims to Medicaid agencies in four states for prescription drugs dispensed to persons covered both by Medicaid and by private third-party insurance. The retail pharmacy chain allegedly charged the four state Medicaid programs the difference between what the private insurance companies paid for the drugs and what the state Medicaid programs would have paid for the drugs in the absence of private insurance.

The government alleges the claims were false because the drug chain was entitled to reimbursement from the Medicaid programs only for the amount the Medicaid beneficiary would have been obligated to pay Walgreens had the claims been

PEOPLE ACTING STUPID REGARDING GAS

Over the last two weeks, I’ve heard of people getting in fistfights and verbal arguments over the lack of supply in gas. While this isn’t astonishing to me as a newspaper publisher or journalist, as a person I think we all need to “get a grip” and get a handle on the situation.

The fact is, the supply is going to take time to

FALL BRINGS CHANGE OF PACE
By Kevin Starr

Summer is over and fall has arrived.  In the garden and landscape, that usually means a little slower pace.  But there’s still plenty of chores to do.  Fall is the best time of the year to establish or renovate tall fescue lawns.  It’s also time to fertilize.  Remember to mow your fescue at about 3-3½ inches.

This is a good time to clean up the landscape and to replenish the mulch if needed.

Tracy Jenkins, county horticulturist, and her crew did an outstanding job with these tasks around the courthouse and Citizens Center prior to the Apple Festival.  I heard several positive comments about how good the grounds looked around these buildings.  It’s always amazing how quality mulch and clean bed lines can improve the appearance of a landscape.

We get a lot of questions about pruning.  Pruning invigorates plants.  At this time of the year, we want plants to slow down and begin the process of hardening off before cold weather comes.  So while it’s fine to do some light pruning on a

The Legend of 'Machine Gun Kelly'

George Kelly and his gang kidnapped a wealthy oil magnate in 1933. Kelly was captured by FBI agents.75 years ago on September 26, 1933, wanted gangster George “Machine Gun” Kelly and three others were captured by Bureau agents and local police.

That date might not have meant much to history except for the reporting that followed. As the legend goes, the surrounded and frightened Kelly shouted something like, “Don’t shoot, G-Men, don’t shoot!” Originally slang for all government agents, the term “G-Men” soon became synonymous solely with FBI special agents.

Did Kelly really say those words? Probably not—it appears to have been manufactured by the media. But it quickly grabbed hold of the popular imagination as Hollywood, the press, the American people, and even the FBI accepted it as fact.

Here’s the story behind the myth and how it grew. On July 22, 1933, George Kelly and his gang kidnapped Charles Urschel, a wealthy oil magnate. After Urschel’s family paid a hefty ransom, he was freed. Over the next few months, our

CHERRYVILLE WOMAN CLAIMED TO BE A HOSTAGE; ARRESTED

By Jon Mayhew

CHERRYVILLE –
It’s the call that no law enforcement officer wants to hear. A man is armed with a gun and is holding a woman hostage. That’s the scenario that Jody Beam Browne, 47, outlined for Gaston County authorities last weekend.

After Cherryville Police started their investigation, Browne went from being a victim, to a suspect.

According to Det. Mike Allred with Cherryville Police, Browne said she was being held at gunpoint and suddenly yelled while she was on the phone.

Suspect literally “scared neighbor to death” per authorities

By Jon Mayhew

Larry Whitfield is charged with murder, kidnapping, breaking and entering, and attempted armed robbery.

GASTON COUNTY – Some Lincoln County drivers along I-85 in Gaston County couldn’t help but notice authorities on the side of the road, pointing rifles into the woods. Authorities in Gaston County were on a manhunt for two men who attempted to rob a Belmont bank Friday.

Police finally located Quanterrios McCoy and Larry Whitfield after searching all day. McCoy is charged with attempted robbery of the Fort Financial Credit Union on North New Hope Road.

The 20-year-old males were sighted by bank employees. And while the duo got into the bank, they never made it to the lobby. Bank employees locked the security doors.
