LINCOLN FIREFIGHTERS TO WEAR EAST LINCOLN TEE
SHIRTS Mustangs Defeat Wolves at David Clark Stadium
By Jon

DENVER -- Both
East Lincoln and Lincolnton's marching bands
performed the Star Spangled Banner on the field
at David Clark Stadium Friday night, in front of
a standing-room-only crowd before the start of a
county rivalry that goes back 35 years.
That was the
only sign of unity between the two teams. Once
the whistles blew and the cannon fired at the
beginning of the game, all bets were
off....except one.
Firefighters
from the Lincolnton Fire Department and the East
Lincoln Fire Department made a friendly wager.
The wager, simply, was the fire department of the
losing team had to wear tee shirts representing
the fire departments of the winning team.
UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN FOCUSES
LOCAL, LOCAL, LOCAL
Campaign Kickoff Thursday at Lincoln Country Club
By Jon

LINCOLNTON -- This year's
United Way of Lincoln County fundraising campaign
hopes to hit a hole in one with contributors.
Thursday night,
interim director Kathy Vinzant proclaimed this
year's campaign was "Tee It Up and Drive It
home to Lincoln County."
The goal for the
campaign is to be local, local, local.
"We want
people to focus on the needs here in Lincoln
County," said Vinzant, adding the money
that's given in Lincoln County stays in Lincoln
County.
Thursday night's
event marked the 48th annual United Way of
Lincoln County campaign. And despite the recent
salary controversy of another United Way's CEO in
Charlotte, United Way officials in Lincoln want
prospective contributors to know that the
organization here is in no way affiliated with
the Greater Charlotte United Way.
Board member Jim
Mauney said that people who live in Lincoln
County but participate in their corporation's
United Way campaign can designate their donations
to come to Lincoln.

By Jon

LINCOLNTON --
Thursday was a big day for the Hesed House of
Hope. First, The Timken Foundation presented the
United Way of Lincoln County with a check for
$100,000. The money, according to Hesed board
chairman Cathy Davis, will be earmarked for the
new homeless shelter.
"We're very pleased to announce that,"
Davis told the Lincolnton City Council late
Thursday.
The shelter,
which will house a maximum of 35 residents, was
also given the green light Thursday night by the
Lincolnton City Council. The council unanimously
approved the conditional use permit request that
would allow construction of the shelter. The
process was held up in Septemnber when Council
learned Hesed House of Hope officials missed a
critical planning board meeting. The public
hearing on the issue -- and subsequent vote --
was postponed until the October meeting.
City planning
director Steve Gurley told council that city
staff and the planning board recommended approval
of the project, especially with the onset of
colder weather. Gurley, however, said there were
still some things Hesed needed to do to comply
with city regulations.
"We'll need
a detailed screening and parking lot landscaping
plan," said Gurley. "This includes what
type of trees, shrubs and
