FARMERS MARKETS STILL
OPERATING
By Kevin Starr
Lovers of fresh, local
produce still have time to visit our farmers
markets.

The Denver location at Rock Springs School will
continue to open each Saturday morning through
October 25. It will then close until November 22
when it will open for one day only for a special
holiday market. We hope that a lot of our craft
vendors will be back that day and will provide
some good shopping for folks looking for unique
Christmas presents. Naturally, there will be late
vegetables that you can purchase for your
Thanksgiving meal the following week.
On October 11, the Lincolnton market will switch
to a Saturday only schedule that will continue
through November 22. There will be a holiday
market on that day and then the market will close
for the season.
I stopped by the Lincolnton market on Saturday
and saw a good supply of late vegetables
including sweet potatoes, greens,

ECONOMY
TAKES CENTER STAGE AT TUESDAY FORUM
Exclusive
Video: U.S. Congressional Candidates talking
about the economy

By Jon

LINCOLNTON --
While a televised presidential debate may have
detracted from a large crowd at Tuesday night's
candidate's forum at the Lincoln Cultural Center,
the people that did attend learned a wealth of
information on a hot button topic affecting
Lincoln residents, as well as people nationwide.
That issue was
the economy.
Whether
candidate for the Lincoln County Board of
Education or Lincoln County Commission, or
candidate for the 10th U.S. Congressional
district, answers to pre-approved questions
somehow reflected the taxpayer's wallets and the
effects of rising energy and food prices.

video on The Carolina Scoop, both Rep. Patrick

COUNTY COMMISSION CANDIDATES
LOOK TOWARDS COUNTY'S FUTURE
Some candidates call for better relationship
with other governmental bodies
By Jon
Mayhew
LINCOLNTON --
Ask the county commission candidates what one of
the most important functions of county government
is and the answer may be a bit of a surprise:
relationship with other governmental bodies.
Voters at the
candidate's forum Tuesday night learned that
there are strained relationships between sitting
commissioners and the Lincoln County Board of
Education and the state Department of
Transportation.
Candidate Leroy
Buff said that relationship between commissioners
and the board of education is paramount in
providing a good quality of life in Lincoln
County.
"There
isn't a good relationship between the schools and
the commission," said Buff. "Educating
our children are extremely important to the
future. We need to work more closely with the
school system and need to set funding priorities
and work on the necessities in schools."
On the heels of
Buff's comments, candidate and department of
transportation engineer Gary Eudy said the bad
relationship of the county commission extends to
the state Department of Transportation.
Eudy called the
relationship between Lincoln County leaders and
the DOT "adversarial."
"Roads
(aren't given because they're needed, they) are
political," said Eudy. "We're not
really going to get much action regarding roads.
The key to new and improved roads lie with state
senator Jim Forrester and state house
representative Johnathan Rhyne."
Besides
addressing the importance of relationships
between county commissioners and other
governmental bodies, candidates focused on the
future of Lincoln County.
All five
candidates agreed it's going to be tough economic
times for Lincoln for awhile.
They also agreed
there is room for opportunity.
The agreement,
however, ended when it came to achieving lower
taxes and an improved quality of life.
Vale resident,
restauranteur and former county commissioner
Carrol Mitchem said the hardest process is how to
pay for all the new infrastructure, schools and
quality of life in the county.
"It takes
tax monies to do all of this and the process
needs to be looked into," said Mitchem.
"We really need the lowest possible tax to
make this happen."
Candidate Buff
took Mitchem's comments one step further, calling
for Lincoln County government itself to
"tighten its own belt."
"The vision
is having a good job, safe neighborhoods and a
quality education," said Buff. "We're
going to have tough times ahead, however."
Candidate Gary
Eudy thinks that taxpayer monies, meantime, need
to be spent more effectively. Several times
during the forum, Eudy referred to himself as a
"conservative democrat."
"The
current economic situation may hurt us in the
future," cautioned Eudy. "Some
difficult decisions may have to be made."
East Lincoln
resident and candidate George Arena said county
budgets nationwide are moving counties closer and
closer to what he called "backing ourselves
against the wall." And while other
candidates were cautioning voters about the
tougher times ahead, Arena viewed the economic
challenges facing Lincoln as an opportunity.
"We have a
new road in Lincoln County in Highway 16,"
said Arena. "We have the opportunity to
build along that road as well as expanding the
Lincoln County Airport. We need to do a good job
about improving the quality of life in
Lincoln."
A light moment
during the forum came when moderator Gaye Howard
asked Patton if there would ever be county-wide
water and sewer service.

MAN
ARRESTED AFTER
PASSING STOPPED SCHOOL BUS
Authorities score
drugs, cash during arrest
By Jon
Mayhew
LINCOLNTON -- A
Lincolnton man is arrested after police witness
the driver pass a stopped school bus Monday
afternoon at the intersection of Maiden Highway
and Colonial Village Drive.
Officer Billy
Burgin was on patrol when he saw a white Dodge
Intrepid pass the bus, which had its red lights
flashing and stop arm out. The bus had apparently
just dropped off children who may have crossed
busy Maiden Highway.
The vehicle,
driven by Tod-Jaa Dazy-Juan Tilley, 23, of the
300 block Mull Road, Lincolnton, was stopped by
Burgin.
As he approached
the driver's side of the vehicle, he noticed the
odor of marijauna. According to the incident
report at the police department, Tilley didn't
have any identification on him.
A passenger in the vehicle identified himself as
17-year-old Joey Somerset. As Burgin continued to
talk to the men, he noticed they were acting very
nervous.

COMMISSIONERS
TO EVALUATE VALUATION PROCESS
Commissioner Marie Moore's Motion for Information
Rejected
By Jon Mayhew
LINCOLNTON --
Lincoln County Commissioners are planning to
evaluate the property valuation process, which
came under fire earlier this year after residents
received their property valuations.
In some cases,
property values jumped more than 100 percent.
Monday night,
commissioner Bruce Carlton said the valuation
process for Lincoln County is flawed.
"The
citizens of Lincoln County -- our customers, the
taxpayers -- deserve a fair property
valuation," said Carlton, adding the next
property valuation is coming in two years.
Earlier in the
evening, commissioner Marie Moore made a request
for information on property valuations by fire
district.

CHAMBER
UNVEILS NEW WEBSITE

By Jon Mayhew
LINCOLNTON -- With a growing
membership nearing the 700 mark and climbing
daily, the Lincolnton/Lincoln County Chamber of
Commerce recetnly unveiled a new and improved Web
site, which makes finding vital information
easier. The new Web site is www.lincolnchambernc.org.
The man behind
the new design is Richard Stevenson, president
and CEO of Cobblesoft International.
Stevenson said
his company started out of necessity.
"I became
involved in Web site design because I was helping
a friend with a Web site," said Stevenson.
The Chamber's
new Web site recently went live and Stevenson
said the project was much larger than the
projects he's used to working with.
"There were
quite a few 12 hour days involved," said
Stevenson. "I'd estimate there were a couple
hundred hours invested in the project."
The biggest
challenge in designing the Web site is working
with the software that was in place. Stevenson
said the overall look and feel of the new site is
better.
"Besides
being user-friendly, the site is
