Funeral for Chastity Spivey
planned for Saturday in Maiden
By Jon Mayhew
LINCOLN COUNTY
-- As the family of Chastity Spivey prepares to
say goodbye Saturday at the 23-year-old's funeral
in Maiden, family is also praying and hoping
Spivey's two children continue recovering from a
tragic ordeal the trio suffered Tuesday night.
The Carolina
Scoop has learned Chastity Spivey was born in
Lincoln County December of 1984.
Family members
said the children -- Taylor Peyton, 4, and John
Peyton, 2 -- are still in critical condition
Thursday night at Carolinas Medical Center in
Charlotte.
Tuesday before 9
p.m., Spivey and her two children were traveling
on Gladden Drive near Springs East Road in
northern Lincoln County, when Spivey lost control
of her SUV and ended up in a pond, upside down in
about five feet of water.
Spivey's fiance
was in a vehicle in front of Spivey. He stopped,
jumped into the water and while trying to make
entry into the vehicle, screamed for help.
Neighbors unsuccessfully tried to get into the
vehicle and, according to a neighbor that was in
the water, the fire department got into the
vehicle, rescuing the trio.
None of the
vehicle occupants had pulses when they were
pulled from the water, according to authorities.
They were all three revived on the way to the
hospital but Spivey died early Wednesday morning
in Charlotte.
Thursday night,
the children's aunt Amy Carden said the thing
people can do the most is pray for the children.
"That's
what we all can do for them right now," she
said.
Family members
said John gave them hope Thursday, moving his
arms and legs and coughing. While doctors were
able to slightly reduce his level of sedation,
the toddler remained sedated for pain management.
The same,
however, can't be said for his older sister,
Taylor. Thursday, doctors had to put a tube in
her lungs when they

"ARRESTED" FOR GOOD CAUSE THURSDAY Muscular Dystrophy

LINCOLNTON -- In
front of her children Thursday, Judy Smith was
arrested by Lincoln County Shereiff's deputy Don
Sain.
It wasn't for a
crime that Smith, principal of the Lincolnton
campus, was arrested for, however; it was to help
in the fight against Muscular Dystrophy.
Thursday, the
Boger City Fire Department turned into a
"jail," an attempt to "lock
up" a dreaded neuromuscular disease that
affects millions of lives.
Authorities
spent the day "rounding up suspects,"
who were then "jailed" under
"bond" and had to call family, friends
and co-workers to raise "bail."
As she was being
processed into "jail," Smith said that
her Lincolnton students raised more than $1,450
dollars in a penny war towards her
"bail."
"Men
don't believe in the devil now, as their fathers
used to do? They've forced the door of the
broadest creed to let his majesty through; There
isn't a print of his cloven foot, or a fiery dart
from his brow, To be found in the earth or air
today, for the world has voted so. But who is
mixing the fatal draught that palsies heart and
brain, And loads the earth of each passing year
with ten hundred thousand slain? Who blights the
bloom of the land today with the fiery breath of
hell. If the devil isn't and never was? Won't
somebody rise and tell? Who dogs the steps of the
toiling saint, and digs the pits for his feet?
Who sows the tares in the field of Time wherever
God sows his wheat? The devil is voted not to be,
and of course the thing is true; But who is doing
the kind of work the devil alone should do? We
are told he does not go about as a roaring lion
now. But whom shall we hold responsible for the
everlasting row To be heard in home, in church,
in state, to the earth's remotest bound, If the
devil, by a unanimous vote. is nowhere to be
found? Won't somebody step to the front forthwith
and make his bow and show How the frauds and
crime of the day spring up, for surely we want to
know. The devil was fairly voted out, and of
course the devil's gone; But simple people would
like to know who carries his business on."
