AUTHORITIES LOOKING FOR SUSPECT IN DENVER HOME INVASION

By Jon Mayhew

DENVER – Authorities are looking for a man they say pointed a gun at two people during a Thursday home invasion in Denver.

Detectives say Aric Doran Torrence, 27, of Crab Apple Trail, Denver, went to a residence at 1470 Triangle Circle and walked into the house. Authorities say Ryan Sykes was sleeping on the couch and woke up to find Torrence, asking for Nicholas Dustin Harmon.

When Sykes told Torrence he didn't know where Harmon was, that's when Torrence pointed the rifle at him.

Sykes ran out the back door to a neighbor’s house and that’s when Harmon came out of the bedroom and saw Torrence running behind Sykes.  Harmon returned to the bedroom and locked the door.  Torrence returned to the residence and kicked the bedroom door open.  Torrence told Harmon to give him what he had and Harmon turned over a shoebox containing a number of one-dollar bills.  He also took several 20-dollar bills from a dresser.

Harmon said he followed Torrence out of the house asking him why he was doing this. Torrence then turned around and pointed

For What It's Worth
10/13/08

When you go to the ballot box on November 4th, how do you make your vote count?

North Carolina has some funny laws that, in an extreme situation, could possibly invalidate your ballot.

More votes are lost trying to vote a straight party ticket than any other way.

It seems easy enough, just mark one place and go home. If you are like many of us, you may think you have voted in all of the races.

What about for president of the United States? What about the non-partisan judges' races? What about for county commissioners and the school board, and even the Soil and Water Conservation Districts? You didn't vote for any of them.

That's right, you may not even get to help choose a president, the first thing on the ballot.

FALL FOLIAGE COLOR

By Kevin Starr
Lincoln County Cooperative Extension Agent

I had the opportunity to go to the mountains last week for some training. Some of the trees were starting to show significant color. No man-made attraction is more beautiful than the show that nature puts on in the North Carolina mountains. But why do leaves turn certain colors and why are they showier in certain years? The explanation for that follows and is provided by Dr. Robert Bardon, Extension Forestry Specialist from N.C. State University.

Leaves get their green color from a pigment called chlorophyll. This pigment, which is necessary for food production, is found in numerous cells through out the leaf. Along with the green pigment, leaves also contain yellow or orange carotenoids. Most of the year, these yellowish colors are masked by the greater amount of green coloring. But in the fall, partly because of changes in the period of daylight and changes in temperature, the chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the yellowish colors become visible.

The red pigment, anthocyanin, appears later in the growing season as a result of a combination of factors. Anthocyanin is produced from high concentration of simple sugars in the leaf cells and warm sunny days followed by cool nights with temperatures between freezing and 45o F. Variations in leaf colors are due to the mixing of varying amounts of the chlorophyll and other pigments in the leaf during the fall season.

The most vivid colors appear after a warm dry summer and early autumn rains that prevent early leaf fall. Long periods of wet weather in late fall produces a rather drab coloration. Some of the most startling color combinations are to be found in the leaves of red and sugar maples, sassafras, sumac, blackgum, sweetgum, scarlet oak, sourwood, and

DAVID C. KERNELL INDICTED FOR ALLEGED HACK OF GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN’S E-MAIL ACCOUNT

KNOXVILLE — David C. Kernell, 20, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Knoxville, Tennessee, for intentionally accessing without authorization the e-mail account of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Friedrich of the Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney James R. Dedrick for the Eastern District of Tennessee announced today. Kernell turned himself into federal authorities for arrest and will be arraigned today before the Honorable C. Clifford Shirley, United States Magistrate Judge, Eastern District of Tennessee.

The single count indictment, returned on October 7, 2008, and unsealed today, alleges that on approximately September 16, 2008, Kernell, a resident of Knoxville, obtained unauthorized access to Governor Sarah Palin’s personal e-mail account by allegedly resetting the account password. According to the indictment, after answering a series of security questions that allowed him to reset the password and gain access to the e-mail account, Kernell allegedly read the contents of the account and made screenshots of the e-mail directory, e-mail content and other personal information. According to the indictment, Kernell posted screenshots of the e-mails and other personal information to a public website. Kernell also allegedly posted the new e-mail account password, thus providing access to the account by others.

If convicted of the charge, the defendant faces a maximum of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and a three year term
