Board votes unanimously to undergo independent investigation


Parent Larry Turbyfill suggested the Lincoln County Board of Education undergo an investigation into its behavior during the Dr. David Martin/superintendent contract scandal. Board member Carl Robinson made the motion for the investigation and the Board accepted.

One parent speaking during the public comments section during Wednesday night's Lincoln County Board of Education meeting suggested an investigation be launched into Board member's recent conduct during the superintendent controversy.

And based on the comments by Larry Turbyfill, board member Carl Robinson made a motion the Board undergo an independent investigation. In a startling and surprise move, the Board voted unanimously to accept Robinson's motion.

“I continue to get phone calls and emails from people who want to know why we're not renewing Dr. Martin's contract,” said Robinson. “I think the citizens of Lincoln County deserve an explanation...not two or three years from now, but now.”

Before the Wednesday night Lincoln County Board of Education meeting, board member Joan Avery denied passing a note to fellow board member Kelly Childers despite several people directly seeing the action.

Avery said she “didn't know what was going on” while parent Rene Hartley spoke on favoring the extension of superintendent Dr. David Martin's contract.

“I wasn't paying attention,” admitted Avery, whose Howards Creek board seat is up for election this November. She is being challenged by Clayton Mullis.

Detective Mark Stamey with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public's help in finding out who took an excavator from a construction site on March 8.

“Someone removed the Takeuchi Excavator from a construction site in Denver near the 3400 block of Highway 16 north,” said Lincoln County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ricky Hensley.
